The United States Medical Licensing Examination, or USMLE Step 1, is a nationally recognized exam that must be taken before starting a medical career in the United States. This exam measures one’s knowledge of primary health care and nursing skills, and tests applicants’ ability to follow directions, prioritize tasks, and complete tasks quickly. The exam is usually taken throughout one 8-hour session, consisting of seven 60-minutes sessions, and consists of a set number of multiple-choice questions. USMLE Step 1 is your first of three necessary licenses for medical trainees in the United States.
There are a few steps involved with obtaining the USMLE Step 1 certification. The first step is to schedule an appointment with an examiner who will perform a physical exam and take blood samples and other laboratory tests. These samples will be used to determine if medical school students are physically capable of handling the USMLE Step 1 examination. Additionally, the exam includes written applications, a background check, an oral evaluation, and a physical exam. Applicants must pass all three components in order to pass their examination successfully.
Aside from taking the examination itself, students will need to submit scores to the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) on or before the first day of class. In order to increase their chances of passing the test, students need to create and maintain a study and practice list. Students should also ensure they have at least one USMLE Step 1 study sheet for each examination type.
After completing the USMLE Step 1, students will be mailed a verification sheet that contains their official scores. All individuals wishing to pursue a United States medical license must meet the required basic science levels to apply. Many schools utilize the USMLE scoring system to help student applicants achieve their scores. However, high school seniors can also take a course in basic science that can help them prepare for the exam.
Once a student has met the essential science requirement, they will need to take the USMLE Step 1 clinical reasoning section. This portion of the examination is primarily scored by the students’ ability to answer questions posed by the examiner. During this stage, students will have to demonstrate their knowledge of the body systems and how these systems function. Students will be given multiple-choice questions during the clinical reasoning stage that will require them to apply logic and reason to answer. High school seniors can use online quiz services and textbooks to prepare for this part of the exam.
Once a student passes the USMLE Step 1 exam, they will be sent a confirmation sheet that states their score. The sheet will outline all of the tests and quizzes that were taken and will list their scores. Medical students need to review the test r esults before submitting their official score. Some medical schools will require potential students to submit their unofficial scores to be eligible for acceptance. Students should always contact the medical schools they plan to apply to determine their specific application procedures.
Once the student has completed the third and fourth-year examinations, students will be mailed their final USMLE Step 1 examination. During the examination, students will be required to answer multiple-choice questions, to demonstrate that they have a thorough understanding of the topics presented in the USMLE. Students will receive a written examination from the passing panel after passing the third and fourth year of USMLE medical licensing exams.
