How to Pass the RMA Certification
The Registered Medical Assistant certification is a vital credential for entry-level Medical Assisting students. It is a highly respected and rigorous credential that demonstrates a level of professional skill and expertise.
The RMA exam is offered through American Medical Technologists, a nationwide provider of health science certifications. This organization has certified healthcare professionals since 1939 and focuses on a variety of allied health professions, including Medical Assisting.
How to Pass the RMA Certification
To earn an RMA certification, you must pass a written exam. Taking this test is a major step in the process of becoming an RMA, so it’s important to make sure you do it right the first time! Here are a few things to keep in mind before you sit for the exam:
Create a Study Plan
The best way to prepare for the RMA exam is to create a comprehensive study plan. It should include a number of study hours each week, and it should also have set times when you’re not distracted by social media or other activities.
Begin your study plan by reviewing the content outline for the exam. This will provide you with an overview of the types of questions that may appear on the test and will help you gauge how much time you should devote to each category.
Take a Practice Test
To ensure you’re ready for the RMA exam, take a practice test before your real exam date. There are a variety of online practice tests available, some of which are free. These tests are designed to mimic the actual style of the test and will give you a good idea of where you need to improve your skills before you take the real thing.
Once you’ve completed the RMA practice test, it’s time to get your hands on some real RMA study materials. The AMT website features a variety of books and digital resources that can help you prepare for the RMA exam.
Be Patient
It can take a while for AMT to approve your application for certification, so be prepared to wait before you can take the test. You can check on your progress by logging into your AMT account and checking the “My Certifications” section.
When the AMT approves your application, you’ll receive an Authorization to Test letter that will list how and when the exam will be administered. Upon receipt, you can schedule an exam time and location with Pearson VUE by either calling them or logging into their website.
AMT recommends that you arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes early so you can find parking, use the restroom, and become comfortable before your exam. You can also ask for special accommodations, such as an audio test or oral interpreter.
The RMA exam is a two-hour computerized test that requires 200-230 multiple-choice questions. You’ll have a score displayed momentarily after you complete the test, and AMT will mail you a certificate within 2 weeks.
If you fail to pass the RMA exam, AMT offers a re-take. This can be done 45 days after your initial attempt, but it’s recommended that you take the exam no more than four times.
