How to Motivate Your Kids to Learn Quran?

One of the best gifts that you can give your kids is the gift of the Quran i.e. to motivate them to learn, understand, and memorize the Quran. Giving importance to your kids Quran education and making arrangements for it not only wins your parental responsibilities but also earns you rewards from Allah. Leaving behind practicing Muslim children is the greatest legacy you can leave as a Muslim parent.

Motivating your kids to learn Quran is not as easy as it may seem. As Quran learning is a long-term commitment, most kids embark on their Quran learning journey but lose their motivation along the way. It’s important that you approach it in a well-thought-out manner so that your kids complete their Quran learning and/or memorization successfully and in the shortest possible time.

If you are not sure how to make your kids achieve this, the following are some tips that you can follow.

  1. Be What You Want Your Kids to Be

This is the shortest recipe I can give you to make your kids listen to you. Kids are not influenced by instructions, advice, or punishments but they get easily influenced by what they see. If you want to make your kids successful, be successful yourself. If you want them to be truthful, be truthful yourself. If you want them to keep away from smoking, quit smoking.

If you want your kids to develop an interest in Quran learning, show them through your actions by regularly reading the Quran, Tafseer books, attending Quran lectures, and practicing teachings of the Quran.  Walk the talk and you will soon see your kids following you.

  1. Tell Them the Benefits of Understanding the Quran

Of course, learning the Quran gives you lots of heavenly benefits but in order to motivate kids, you have to appeal to the more practical side of things. When they see how it will help them in their worldly affairs, they are more likely to commit to the task. For example, you can point out the educational benefits of learning the Quran, how it will increase their knowledge about a variety of subjects, and how it will help them understand their religion better.

Quran is an ocean of knowledge. It covers every subject from history to science, from politics to economy, and from psychology to geography. It is full of wisdom and offers life changing teachings. By directing your kids’ attention to these benefits that will have a positive lasting impact on their lives, there is a good chance that they develop an interest in Quran learning.

  1. Make Dua

Don’t underestimate the significance of Dua. You never know when and which one of your Duas will be answered. After all, it’s in Allah’s hand to give someone Hidaya (guidance). As Allah said to his prophet (peace be upon him):

“Verily, you (O Muhammad) guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He knows best those who are the guided.” [al-Qasas 28:56]

So keep asking Allah to show you and your kids the straight path which is the understanding of and practicing the Quranic teachings.

  1. Help them Build A Healthy Social Circle

Kids are easily and unconsciously influenced by their social circle. If they are surrounded by morally corrupt friends, they can’t escape their bad influence. Similarly, if their company consists of friends who are religious and who learn, love, and live the Quran, it is for sure that it will have a positive influence on your kids. Since a child can’t be home all the time, his company is the one thing that will either build or destroy his character.

Constantly monitor your kid’s circle of friends and make sure he does not make connections with anyone whose character and activities have a question mark. Encourage him to befriend and value good friends. If possible, help him befriend like-minded, coeval people who share the same interests. For example, if you want your child to be Hafiz (one who has memorized the Quran), befriending someone who is also a Hafiz or undertaking an online Hifz course will do wonders. They can recite the Quran to each other, correct each other’s mistakes, and share ideas on how to make their Hifz better and faster.

  1. Arrange For a Good Quran Tutor/Institution

Learning of anything needs a proper environment. Why do we send our kids to school even if we can teach them ourselves or arrange a home tutor? Because schools provide a conducive learning environment where kids interact with other kids and take part in extracurricular activities. It develops their overall personality apart from learning a particular course/subject.

Now that you have instilled a love for the Quran in the hearts of your kids, give them the environment to start learning it in a proper way. Look for a good Quran Institute that has qualified Islamic scholars and offers a variety of Quran courses and enroll your kids there. If you face difficulties in finding such an institute or tutor, there are lots of online Quran tutors and academies that offer online Quran classes for kids. Make a conscious effort to find the best one by taking into account their qualification, experience, interpersonal skills, etc. The good news is that they offer free trials so you can make an evaluation before registering.
