How to maintain a sump pump?

Most sump pumps have a battery backup system that comes with an alarm and helps you to monitor if the sump is backing up water properly or not. Sump pumps are pretty convenient to use, but just like any other product sump pump also requires regular maintenance. To ensure that the sump pump is fully operating, keep a close eye on sump pump maintenance every couple of months especially during heavy rainfall. 

Here are a few basic tips on how to maintain a sump pump on a regular basis: 

● Ensure that the sump pump is plugged into the main power circuit also known as the ground fault circuit interrupter ( GFCI ), and the cord length is in good condition. Mostly in remote areas, GFCI frequently trips that leads to the shutting off sump pump. So, make sure to check on the sump pump regularly so that you can fix the GFCI in case of an emergency. 

● A sump pump must always stand upright as sudden vibrations can make it fall or tilt it into one side. This can block the float arm, and due to which it can’t pump the water. 

● To check if the pump is operating automatically or not, pour a bucket of water into the sump pit. If it doesn’t start immediately, then you need to get it repaired. 

● Ensure that the duct hole in the outlet pipe is clear. 

● If you have a submersible pump, then you need to physically remove the trash from the pit and clean it completely. Few large debris and stones can block the inlet causing damage to the pump gradually. 

● Make sure that the discharge pipe is tightly fitted and should drain out water at least 15-20 feet away from the main area. 

The power supply is another major factor. Sump pump completely relies on electricity and can cause big trouble during power cut-off. However, most of the sump pumps are now available with a backup option that makes the sump pump fully -operative even during an inadequacy of electricity. All these pumps utilize the pressure of running water to pump water out of the sump pit.
