Once relegated to the fringes of geek culture, steampunk fashion has become a mainstream trend with designers like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen producing clothes and accessories.
But what is steampunk? Fusion of Victorian style with modern technology. A loose set of guidelines for creating your own unique look. The fashion has been described as a “weird 19th-century version of the future, with anachronistic technology.”
Steampunk can be the most whimsical and romantic of styles, but it does not have to be. It’s all about bits and pieces and what you do with them. It is particularly good for people who like to mix and match their clothing.
The style was first introduced in the 1980s as an offshoot of punk and invention of the science-fiction fans who were looking for a new way to express themselves.
The movement grew ever stronger with the advent of internet, making it easier and allowing far more people to become aware of it. Special events were organized, where the participants were able to gather and share their ideas about steampunk clothing. Huge markets were organized in such places as Second Life, where the visitors could purchase original steampunk items.
An article in Time magazine describes the movement like this: “As the long-running sci-fi subculture has evolved over decades, it has become a self-aware genre with its own iconography, chronology and mythology. “This is a genre where you can go and find interesting ways of using all sorts of objects that already exist,” says Elizabeth Croft, an academic whose work focuses on science fiction and science fantasy. “It’s a way of making things that are perhaps more fashionable or more desirable than they would have been in the past.”
A special category of steampunk clothing for men was introduced. It more of a style of dress, where modern materials like leather and metal were used. Most steampunk outfits look very tough and masculine, which can be true in the Victorian time as well.
If you want to go steampunk in 2021, there are a number of essentials that you will need to comlete the look:
