Are you trying to find your next signature scent?
Everyone needs to change things up every now and again, and picking a new cologne is a great way to add a subtle difference to your overall aesthetic. But how can you pick the right one?
There are thousands of colognes to choose from, and it can be overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to help.
Keep reading to learn our tips for picking cologne that you love.
Trial and Error
Above everything else, you’re going to have to go through a trial and error process while you’re finding your perfect cologne. It’s best to start this process by going to brick-and-mortar stores to get a general idea of what works for you and what doesn’t, even if you don’t choose to buy something right away.
When you browse through the best cologne bottle designs, find general scent groups that work for you, and determine if you have any favorite brands, you’ll have an easier time making a selection.
This process will continue after you’ve chosen your first cologne (unless you’re quite lucky). Sometimes you don’t know how you feel about something until you’re smelling it full-time for a few days.
Know Your Ideal Scent Profiles
So what kinds of scents are you going for?
For anyone who’s never spent time trying to pick a new scent, you might not have considered the different categories that you’re looking at.
Many colognes combine unique scents, but it’s common for them to fit in one of several categories. Some colognes are sweet-smelling, some are earthy, others are fruity, and some are floral (among others).
The type of scent that you choose will contribute to your overall “aura” when you enter a room. What are you trying to convey?
Know Scent Strengths
Did you know that not all colognes are alike? Cologne is somewhat of a blanket term, but it actually breaks down into categories based on the concentration of the scent.
Parfum is the most concentrated. It can have up to 40% concentration and it lasts all day (for better or for worse). If you’re new to scents, this isn’t a good choice for you because it’s so easy to overdo it.
Perfumes and Eau de Toilette scents are concentrated enough to have some staying power, but shouldn’t last longer than about 7 hours at most. They’re great for a subtle scent that only lasts as long as you want it to.
These are the two categories that you should focus on for your first signature scent.
Eau Fraiche is a weaker scent with a concentration of around 2%. These scents are light but last for an hour.
Find Your New Favorite Cologne Today
Picking a new cologne is a lot of fun, so don’t stress out about it. Testing out new scents to find one that fits you can be tedious, but you’ll end up with your perfect match if you trust the process.
