How Non-Tech Savvy Can Create a Website

This is the first in a series of articles on how to create websites. I will be using WordPress as my platform, but this can easily be adapted for other platforms such as Joomla or Drupal. The goal here is not to teach you about web design and development, but rather to show you how easy it is to get started with creating your own website.

The Basics: What Is A Web Site?

“web site” is simply an online document containing information and images. It may contain links to other documents which are called ‘pages’. These pages may include text, pictures, videos, audio files, etc. In order to make these things happen, we need software – specifically a program known as a content management system. There are many different CMSs available today; however, most people use one of two types: open source or proprietary.

Book a Domain

To start a website you must have a domain name. It is the first step to start your website.

How to find and register a domain name for free. You can buy domains from any number of companies including GoDaddy, Namecheap and 1&1 Internet. However, if you want to build a professional-looking website, there are several reasons why you might choose to go with a company like Bluehost instead. For example, they offer unlimited email accounts, cPanel and more importantly, their support team has been around since 1999! They even provide tutorials so you can learn everything yourself.

Choosing the best web hosting

Hosting refers to where your website lives when it’s up and running.

Once you have registered your domain name, you now need somewhere to put your website. Most sites recommend choosing between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. We chose dedicated because we wanted complete control over every aspect of our website. But again, both options work well depending on what kind of experience you prefer.

How to install WordPress

WordPress is probably the easiest way to set up a new website. All you really need to do is download the installer file and upload it into your root directory. Then follow the instructions provided within the installation wizard. Once installed, you’ll see a screen asking you to enter your username and password. Enter them and click ‘Install’. That’s pretty much it – just wait until the process finishes and you’re ready to begin adding content.

Choose a WordPress theme

WordPress themes come in various shapes and sizes. Some are designed to look good while others focus on functionality. We recommend going with something simply because you won’t really notice much difference between them once you’re done building your website.

Creating pages in WordPress

Pages are basically individual posts that appear on your home page. Each post will be displayed under its own heading. The title of each post appears above the main body of the article. This opens a blank form allowing you to add whatever details you wish. When finished, save the changes using the Save button. Now visit your homepage and check out how your new page looks.
