How Do You Keep your Heating Bill Low?

Date:

If you are worried about your heating bill spiralling out of control, here are a few tips by which you can try and keep it within reasonable limits. Come winter, you can put some of these tips to good use and save up on that heating bill.

How to Keep your Heating Bill under Limit?

Here are some tips that will help you.

Check out your door thresholds

Door thresholds are notoriously drafty and often, there’s a gap between the floor and the bottom of the door. If you can see the light from the foyer or the next room shining under your door, then yes, your valuable warm air is leaking out. You can adjust the threshold so that it actually makes contact with the bottom of the door and prevent any more leakages. It’s just one of the ways to make your home more energy efficient.

Eliminate drafts

Often, windows and electrical boxes allow drafts in, on account of not being properly insulated. You could call in a professional or get some acrylic caulk and do it yourself. As long as the windows and electrical boxes are properly insulated, you should be able to prevent any warm air from leaking out.

So, if you think that your room is not warm enough despite the heater being on, then it is time to check the windows and other parts of the room for drafts and gaps in the structure.

Try portable heaters

The chances are that your home is being heated by a furnace. If that’s the case, then you may want to turn down that furnace and instead opt for a portable heater.

As the name implies, it is portable, and you can use it to heat only the rooms you’re in, rather than the whole house. It should enable you to save up big on those heating bills.

The only downside is that portable heaters are not free and you will have to purchase one. Despite that, you should still save quite a bit on your monthly heating bill. You can read more here about how to use portable heaters and save money.

Use plastic

Windows, French to bay windows and patio doors account for nearly 25% percent heat loss in your homes. One of the ways to prevent this from happening is to use plastic to cover these windows and patio doors. Plastic is not costly, and you can use it to protect your windows and doors. Moreover, it plays the role of an insulator and keeps the heat in.

Plug those leaks and holes

One of the things you can do is to check your home for leaks and holes, from air ducts to walls, from the basement to chimney and plug all open holes and leaks. Often, an open chimney can account for a whopping 30% drop in heat, especially when you are not using the fireplace.

Warm air always rises, so if you have a chimney and you’re not using the fireplace, then all your warm, heated air is fast escaping through the chimney vents. So you may want to plug all open holes and leaks and prevent that warm air from escaping out.

With these tips, you should be able to keep that heating bill within reasonable limits when you want to stay warm during the winter.
