How Air suspensions work, the benefits and drawbacks of this system

Air suspension in vehicles is a system powered by an electric pump or compressor that fills the air under the bellow, which is carried by a textile reinforced kind of rubber. This system is the substitution of leaf suspension or coil suspension, and an airbag is made of polyurethane or rubber. The compressor blows up the bag to a little pressure and acts like spring.

The compressor decreases the volume and increases the pressure. If extra air is pumped in the bellow, the vehicle reaches its standard height, and due to a rise in pressure, vehicle height remains regular or at constant. The important primary use of air suspension is to make driving more smooth and achieve a quality ride. Air suspension is a popular system that changes the steel spring suspension in various vehicles. 

Many vehicles have metal springs that follow the damping mechanism that absorb the energy and send it back to the system to get a better response. But replacing metal springs with airbags is a more reliable and convenient method. This system provides better endurance, better performance, and low the distance between the car’s axle and frame, which allows the vehicle to give a more clean drive on rugged terrain. 

This system has various benefits that give a more smooth and clean drive on the road and provide excellent resistance on off-road. It improves the quality of vehicles and has many benefits like:

The air suspension lowers the vehicle’s harshness, noise, and vibration, making the vehicle work perfectly and gives a comfortable drive without any trouble or fatigue.

This system will give the vehicle more durability, as it allows the heavy load easily. The weight compresses the air springs, which increase the air pressure and provide a balanced ride.

It allows excellent allowance for better results for both on the road and off-road use. It will enable the driver to easily control the vehicle on the rough terrain and decrease the possibility of damage to the vehicle’s chassis or underside.

Create pressure:

This system contains air, which creates more pressure on the spring and to the system. The airbag can burst if you do not install it well or mishandle it. It has a more complex installation system than the traditional spring system. 


This system can also be damaged by rust and moisture as it leads to the malfunction of air struts or bags. 

Failure of Air Suspension:

This system is more reliable than other methods, but it leads to a significant problem if any technical difficulty occurs. If air suspension fails, then it fails to connect the bag or air struts to the system. 

Compressor Burn:

Compressors play a significant role in maintaining the air pressure of vehicles. But if air leaks from the spring or brig, then this may burn the compressor. 

Expensive Repairs:

Its suspension elements are expensive, and in case of any damage, it is completely replaced with new features. And if some severe issues occur, then a whole new system is installed in the car.
