Homoeopathic Treatment For Endometriosis

Date:

Endometriosis is a painful disease of the female reproductive system. In this condition, the tissue layer covering the inside of the uterus grows outside it. Often the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and tissues around the ovaries and the uterus get affected.

Common symptoms include pain in the pelvic area, heavy bleeding during periods, painful bowel movements and infertility. Most people having endometriosis experience chronic pelvic pain while 70% of the pain is experienced during the menstruation cycle. Usually, half of the affected females become infertile and are likely to experience painful sexual intercourse. Endometriosis not only affects an individual physically but also socially and psychologically.

Signs and Symptoms of Endometriosis

The common signs and symptoms of a person suffering from endometriosis are as follows :

  1. Chronic Pelvic Pain
  2. Dysmenorrhea
  3. Dysuria
  4. Body Pain
  5. Dyspareunia
  6. Mittelschmerz
  7. Infertility

Recurring pelvic pain is a major symptom of endometriosis. Only 20 to 25% of women are asymptomatic. Symptoms of pain are also associated with endometrial lesions and cystic ovarian lesions. Only 5% of females with deep endometriosis do not feel any pain. Other symptoms of endometriosis include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Migraines
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Irregular Periods
  • Fever
  • Stress

Causes

What causes endometriosis is not entirely understood. Heredity and environmental factors do play a role but not always. Diagnosis is commonly based on symptoms. Diagnostic methods include biopsy and imaging of the affected area.

Risk Factors

Certain genetic/hereditary and environmental factors increase the risk of individuals having this disease.

  • Genetic Factors- Siblings or children of people with endometriosis have a greater risk of having the disease. Low progesterone levels in an individual is a genetic flaw and may cause hormonal imbalances. Researchers have proposed that endometriosis is the result of a series of hits within targeted genes. It is a mechanism similar to the deadly disease of cancer. Initial mutation can either be somatic or heritable. Changes in genomes have also been connected with endometriosis. The 9 locis replicate robustly in various MNAs that reach genome-wide significance.
  • Toxins in the Environment- Exposure to estrogen for a prolonged period can cause the disease. Obstruction in the menstrual outflow is also a probable risk factor. Multiple studies have tried to find a potential link between endometriosis and dioxin exposure. Several reviews have negated the link. A review published in the year 2008 concluded that though the preliminary works suggested the involvement of dioxins in the pathogenesis no data is sufficient enough to understand and prove the mechanism of toxicity.
  • Other Popular Theories- Several theories are trying to investigate the risk factors of having endometriosis. These are :
  1. Retrograde menstruation theory
  2. Vascular Dissemination
  3. Stem Cells
  4. Oxidative Stress
  5. Coelomic Metaplasia
  6. Autoimmune

Diagnosis and Treatment

Women often report misdiagnosis as the symptoms are often considered normal or trivial. There is an average delay of 6 to 7 years between the onset of the symptoms or signs and surgically acquired biopsies. Therefore, diagnostic inefficiency often leads to serious conditions. Other diagnostic methods include :

  1. Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)
  2. Pelvic Examination
  3. Ultrasound
  4. Laparoscopy
