There is a lot of contribution to the world of generating electricity. The world stands at its prime of an electrically charged generation. This would not have been possible without the brilliant minds creating a foundation.

Energy cannot be created; it can only be transferred. Electricity is an energy that may not be created. But human beings have found a way to create a source through which the energy is transferred. Among this comes the role of gas and steam turbines. But the question remains which one is more efficient? We are here to answer that

What are gas turbines?

Did you know in 2020, there was a 54% hike in orders for gas turbines services? You may also call it a combustion engine since this is a kind of internal combustion engine. A gas turbine has primarily three components:

¬∑        An upstream rotating gas compressor

¬∑        A combustor

¬∑        A downstream turbine

A typical gas combustor works on the principle of the Brayton cycle with air being the primary working fluid. The air flows through the compressor which creates a high resonance. It is then followed by spraying fuel through the compartments into the pressurized air. This is a continuous process knowing that the temperature remains high.

This is now pressurized heated energy which is then passed through the turbine. This energy is high enough to work the compressor. A lot of it is unused therefore it can be recycled into the same cycle and thus repeat the energy generation. Finally, the air is passed through fans which are connected to a generator which produces electricity.

What are steam turbines?

Steam engines first came into existence in 1884, invented by Charles Parsons. Although the construction and the foundation of steam engines are very different from what it was then. Steam engines function on thermodynamics where it converts heat energy to electrical energy.in 2017 there were 112 steams turbines ordered in the world. 

There are not only but multiple stages of heating the steam which causes it to expand a lot. it makes the ideal choice for reversible expansion or contraction.  This is so done by the turbines which have rotatory motions which create energy. A steam engine excerpts heat or thermal energies which are treated under pressure and then moved forward to create mechanical energy.

This mechanical energy is then passed through blades that are constantly rotating. The motion separates the electrons or electric charge in a separate chamber and thus producing electrical energy.

Difference between gas and steam turbines

There is a reason why there are two different generators for each source. Apart from steam and gas, there are more ways through which electricity can be generated. Nonetheless, it will continue with the same mechanism except for having the source altered.

The difference between a gas turbine and a steam turbine is that steam turbines generate electricity through the expansion of steam. While gas turbines use different types of fuels which are sprayed into the chambers. They are regulated to have high pressure and heat followed by recycling the remaining.

Another difference is that since the output air is again recycled, every little bit of the fuel secretes energy. That means none of it is going to waste. The steam turbine uses steam, as in water vapours that expand and contract to produce energy. Wastage is a possibility in steam turbines.

One final thing that distinguishes gas turbines from steam turbines is the fact that gas turbines are a complete operation. That means, it has chambers that follow a procedure with a cycle and thus creating tons of energy. A steam turbine on the other hand is a constant movement of the water vapours inside the chamber. It continues to expand and spin the blades creating torque and then generating electric current.

Which one is the most efficient and why?

With the above differences that are provided, it is safe to say that gas turbines would generate more efficiency. Since the cycle is more obsolete and there is a way that the external output can be recycled. It would create more sources for the output to become significant. The significance leads to 42% more efficiency.  

That being said, steam engines are simpler and more sophisticated. The process is easy and does not require much effort. Moreover, it is less time-consuming and thus you can rely on them to continue their output. Moreover, their source is abundant and that is also a factor that may generate more efficiency.
