Seattle-Based Writer Turns Migration, Memory, and Identity into Award-Winning Poetry Celebrated Worldwide

Seattle, Washington — Filipino poet and author Rea M. Maac, whose journey spans Marinduque to Singapore and now the United States, has been featured among the Top Global Poets in the Hashtag Kalakar Global Art and Writing Contest — a respected international platform known for uplifting authentic voices from around the world.

Her work, deeply shaped by migration, longing, identity, and resilience, reflects a literary philosophy rooted in lived experience and emotional truth. Each poem she writes carries fragments of home, echoes of journeys taken, and stories of the migrant soul — a voice both tender and unshakeably powerful.

From performing on Singapore’s most iconic stages to publishing internationally recognized poetry collections, Rea’s life and creative journey show how storytelling can transcend borders, cultures, and circumstances.

“When you write, always write from the heart,” Rea says, capturing the essence of her creative legacy.

A Poet Formed by Migration, Memory & the Pulse of Two Homelands

Born in Marinduque, Philippines, Rea’s early connection to poetry began in her school years, writing for the school gazette — not yet knowing that words would one day carry her across continents.

Her life took a transformative turn when she moved to Singapore in 2010, where she discovered a thriving community of migrant poets. It was here that she submitted her poem “Alikabok” to the Migrant Workers Poetry Competition in 2016 — earning a shortlist spot that opened doors she never imagined.

“That moment changed everything,” Rea recalls.
“Joining the competition made me realize that our migrant stories matter — they deserve to be heard.”

From there, she became a familiar presence in Singapore’s literary scene — featured in the Singapore Writers Festival (2017 & 2018), performing with Zebra Crossing at the Esplanade, and contributing to several acclaimed anthologies such as Our Homes, Our Stories, Get Luckier, Call and Response, and Translating Migration.

Her work blends personal history with collective memory — a tapestry of longing, displacement, and the fragile beauty of human resilience. When she relocated to Seattle in 2024, her poetry carried with it the voice of every migrant she met, every story she witnessed, every life she touched.

From Stage Lights to Story Pages: A Creative Journey Rooted in Heart and Humanity

Even before her global recognition, Rea’s poetic instinct flowed naturally.
As a young student, she wrote wherever words found her — notebook margins, school submissions, anywhere the heart demanded expression.

That raw instinct eventually developed into a refined literary craft, leading to the release of two acclaimed poetry collections:

  • More Than Just A Shadow (2021)
  • Rice with Salt and Water (2022)

Meanwhile, in Singapore, Rea took on leadership roles within the migrant writing community. She helped organize the Carnival of Poetry, a monthly multicultural gathering that showcased creative voices from around the world.

“Poetry helped me survive,” Rea says.
“But more importantly, it helped me connect — with people, with my heritage, and with myself.”

Today, she continues writing from Seattle, blending Filipino identity, migrant longing, and global perspective into a singular voice that resonates across audiences.

Legacy in Motion: The Future of Rea’s Poetic Voice

As Rea continues writing from Seattle, her poetry remains rooted in the migrant experience — filled with stories of sacrifice, memory, and hope. Whether performing, publishing, or mentoring emerging writers, she carries the same unwavering purpose:

To write truthfully.
To honor her roots.
To give voice to the unheard.

Every poem becomes a vessel — carrying the scent of home, the ache of movement, and the quiet triumph of survival.

“A poem becomes a world,” she says.
“And every reader brings it to life in their own way.”

Her work stands as a testament that migration is not just movement — it is transformation, and poetry is the language that preserves it.
