House of the Dragon has been successful in garnering global attention, much like its predecessor, Game of Thrones.
It’s quickly become a favorite among fans because of its complex narratives and historical elements.
We list some interesting facts fans would love to know about it.
Historical Inspiration
While the story of House of the Dragon has to do with dragons and fantasy, its roots lie in real history.
George R.R. Martin pulled inspiration from the English Civil War of the 12th century, particularly the conflict over the throne between King Henry I’s daughter Matilda and her cousin Stephen.
The dragons are, unfortunately, fictional.
A Larger Iron Throne
Fans who watched both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon may have noticed a difference in the Iron Throne.
In House of the Dragon, the throne is larger and features more swords.
The idea behind this change was to better align with George R.R. Martin’s original vision in the novels and to make the throne feel more intimidating.
Actors Learned a Constructed Language
The actors playing members of House Targaryen, including Rhaenyra and Daemon, had to learn Valyrian – a language created for the show.
It’s a fictional language that adds elements from Greek and Latin to bring more authenticity and depth to Westeros.
Separate Preparation for Rhaenyra’s Actors
Milly Alcock (younger Rhaenyra) and Emma D’Arcy (older Rhaenyra) were asked not to interact during filming.
This was to keep their portrayals original and uninfluenced or similar to each other’s performances.
More Dragons Than Before
Unlike Game of Thrones, which featured three dragons, House of the Dragon has way more – Season 2 had 15.
This increase in dragons adds to the epic scale of the show, with almost every Targaryen having their own dragon.
