In the current digital age, it is not easy to find real and authentic information sources that you can access to get religious guidance from – specifically to face a collective issue like the COVID-19. What Islam Says About Pandemics

We always hear the phrase ‘Islam is a complete code of life’ – and the recent COVID-19 pandemic was another demonstration to emphasize on this fact. It is mainly due to the fact that on more than one occasions, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) talked about pandemics and how Muslims should deal with these catastrophes.

Let us have an overview of ahadith, where a pandemic was mentioned and the suggested ways to deal with it:

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 71, Number 624:

Narrated Saud:

The Prophet said, “If you hear of an outbreak of plague in a land, do not enter it; but if the plague breaks out in a place while you are in it, do not leave that place.”

Ever since the coronavirus broke out, all world health organizations instructed everyone to stay home and not leave their vicinities. These days, you might see people raise questions about Astrology in Islam or other elements that are deemed as superstitious – my question to them, how do you explain the relevance of a global pandemic with a hadith such as the above one?

In another hadith, quarantine was mentioned by the Holy Prophet (PBUH):

Sahih Bukhari: 5771, Sahih Muslim: 2221

Abu Huraira narrated that Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said:

“Do not quarantine the healthy with the infected.”

During the past few months, we have seen the way COVID-19 patients have been isolated once they tested positive for the virus. This is exactly what the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) talked about in the aforementioned hadith.

Sahih Muslim: 223

Abu Malik al-Ash’ari reported that the Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said:

“Being clean and pure is half of faith.”

We are still seeing government campaigns and those advertisements that talk about washing hands and other cleanliness-related guidelines to keep us safe from contracting the virus. This is exactly what Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentioned in the above hadith.

In another instance, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentioned:

Sahih Bukhari: 3474

Aisha, Mother of the Believers, said:

I asked the Messenger of Allah about plagues and he said, “They are a punishment which Allah sends upon whomsoever He wills, but Allah has made it a mercy to the believers. Anyone who remains in a town which is plagued with an epidemic, remaining patient and anticipating Allah’s reward, while firmly believing that nothing will befall him other than what Allah has preordained for him, then he will receive a reward of a martyr.”

Even after such a major catastrophe, most of us are still not ready to learn the lesson that is there for us to be learned. As mentioned in the hadith above, these epidemics or pandemics test the strength of a believer’s faith. A true believer will know and interpret these signs in the right way manner and act accordingly.
