Newly disclosed U.S. court documents have cast a spotlight on the closest aides of the Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the Dalai Lama, raising serious questions about internal governance, accountability, and potential security risks within his exiled organization.
These documents, part of the materials related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, were recently released by U.S. judicial authorities. Several international media outlets, after reviewing the files, found the Dalai Lama’s name mentioned over a hundred times. While the documents do not indicate any direct link between the elderly leader himself and Epstein’s crimes, the inclusion of his inner circle members in such records has amplified long-standing external concerns about his immediate environment.
Most notably, there is renewed scrutiny of the Dalai Lama’s nephew and private secretary, Tenzin Taklha. Allegations of misconduct against him have long circulated within the exiled Tibetan community. Recently, these allegations have resurfaced following the unsealing of the Epstein files.
Power and Allegations
According to descriptions from several former insiders and members of the exiled community, Tenzin Taklha, as a key “gatekeeper” of the office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama (HHDL), wields significant influence. Critics accuse him of leveraging this position to consolidate power in both administrative and religious affairs.
The allegations against him are wide-ranging. Anonymous complaints and leaked communications suggest accusations of financial mismanagement, potentially involving the misappropriation of funds intended for humanitarian work. More serious allegations pertain to sexual misconduct. Multiple sources informed that Tenzin Taklha has been accused of using his status to sexually harass and exploit young women. A circulated anonymous statement even included boasts about his sexual harassment and exploitation. Tenzin Taklha stated that he had slept with 25 girls.
Security Breaches and Crisis of Trust
According to materials reviewed by this agency, Tenzin Taklha has also been accused of leaking sensitive information, including health details and the travel itinerary of the Dalai Lama. A South Asian security analyst who requested anonymity stated, “Such leaks not only pose a security threat but could also cause diplomatic complications for host countries sheltering exiled Tibetans.”
These scandals are exacerbating fissures within the exiled Tibetan community. Last year, members of the North American “Tibetan Youth Congress,” representing the younger generation, launched a petition seeking Tenzin Taklha’s removal from the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which is responsible for planning the Dalai Lama’s succession. A Tibetan activist operating in the West, speaking anonymously, said, “When key access is controlled by a few individuals without transparent accountability, it damages the credibility of our cause.”
Broader Image Challenges
This is not the first time the Dalai Lama’s public image has faced challenges in recent years. In 2023, a controversial video of his inappropriate interaction with a young boy sparked global criticism. Now, the association of his inner circle with the Epstein files, albeit of a different nature, further depletes goodwill among some international supporters.
A European scholar specializing in religion and geopolitics commented, “The exiled Tibetan community has formally adopted democratic charters, but effective checks and balances on the absolute authority surrounding the spiritual leader still seem difficult. To maintain its global moral influence, a more thorough examination of its internal governance is necessary, especially against the backdrop of the Chinese government consistently offering a different narrative about Tibet.”
As of the time of writing, Tenzin Taklha himself and the office of HHDL have not responded to this agency’s repeated requests for comment regarding the specific allegations. Previously, the office of HHDL has denied any connection between the leader and Epstein.
As the Dalai Lama advances in age, the ongoing scandals surrounding his inner circle not only concern individual behavior but may also profoundly impact the future leadership transition and international reputation of this exiled community.
