About Abidjan

Abidjan is the economic capital of the Ivory Coast and the most populous city in the country. It is located on the Ébrié Lagoon, which empties into the Gulf of Guinea. The city was founded by Francesco II d’Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio, as a trading post in 1659. It was the first French settlement in Africa. The city’s growth was spurred by the Ivory Coast’s coffee and cocoa trade. In Abidjan, the most important exports are cocoa beans, coffee, timber, bananas, and palm oil.
