A word of caution before we delve into the article: interview questions may vary from one organisation to another. They may also change according to the job role you apply for within a company.

As such, this written piece aims to function as a guide and should not be read as a comprehensive or exhaustive list of expected job interview questions! The best way to succeed at any job interview would be by conducting ample research and browsing through this article could function as the first step you take into exploring anticipated job interview questions.

Without further ado, let’s get right into the article!

Dubai’s Top 5 Job Interview Questions

  1. Tell us about yourself.

This is a classic job interview question that one can expect to get asked regardless of where you apply for a job or which designation you may be aiming for. With that being said, the answer you provide to this question can frame your chances of landing the job opportunity right from the very beginning.

As such, it is important to prepare a response for this job interview question beforehand. Summarise your life, ambitions, past work experience and/or education history in a couple of sentences.

Be ready to share a little more about your past work/professional experiences as well as a little on what job responsibilities you have shouldered previously. You could dive a little into some of the responsibilities you hope to acquire – if and only if, you have a clear idea of what is expected of you from the job role you are currently interviewing for!

  1. How long do you intend to work in Dubai?

This is one of those questions that an interviewee may not be asked elsewhere around the world. However, in Dubai, it’s one of the commonly asked job interview questions one can expect to receive from their employer or hiring manager.

Dubai is known to be a space for expats from all around the world to find a work opportunity. People from all walks of life come in hopes of temporary employment, part-time work, full-time positions, permanent contracts as well as in hopes of starting their own businesses as entrepreneurs.

As such, some employers may ask this job interview question in hopes of finding out their employee’s intentions behind coming to Dubai. This will also help them to gauge whether a candidate is appropriate for the current job opening based on their availability for the short-term or a longer one.

  1. What are your salary expectations for this job?

In some countries, this question may not be one that is asked during an interview but rather discussed via email conversations. However, in Dubai, one may expect to be asked this question during an interview.

This is an interview question that needs to be answered carefully. In most cases, the safest answer to provide would be as follows: “My salary expectations for this job are tied to the responsibilities this job position comes with. Could you perhaps share with me a little more on what I could expect on a day-to-day basis from signing up for this role?”

Answering the interview question this way does three things in total. Firstly, it deflects you having to provide a number on the spot. Secondly, you have established that it’s dependent on the duties you will be henceforth assigned. Thirdly, you have now also requested for more details on what exactly you will be asked to do within the office.

This also allows you more room for negotiation in the future too. Since you are now being offered X amount of money for Y number of responsibilities, should the latter increase, you can negotiate for a pay raise in the future too!

  1. Will you be willing to work in other Emirates within the UAE?

This job interview question is usually asked to identify any interest within you when it comes to the matter of relocating elsewhere within the United Arab Emirates, most likely under the same company for a job promotion or similar work opportunity.

Be as honest as possible when it comes to answering this question. If you are settling down with your family and do not wish to uproot yourself every now and then, simply express your disinterest in matters relating to relocation!

On the other hand, if you are open to the option of relocating and would like to experience working within the different regions of the UAE, express your interest to do so!

  1. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Similar to the earlier-mentioned questions, this is one of the top job interview questions asked by numerous employers and hiring managers in Dubai. There is an underlying trick behind the asking of this question too. It is a small test designed to uncover your potential commitment to the firm.

Firstly, answer this question like you would have answered it anywhere else. Relate your response to your ambitions and long-term goals. However, be smart to ensure that your responses are tied to the goals alongside that of the organisation you are interviewing for!

Next, be sure to include the company’s name, presence and goals in your conversation as you share your visions of self-growth for the next foreseeable 5 years. This will help to inform those interviewing you that you are very much interested in growing with the company.

And there you have it – a compiled list of the top 5 job interview questions you can anticipate getting asked from your potential employers as well as the responses to the questions should you be applying for a job within the region of Dubai!
