alliday (1985:101) claims, “Our most powerful conception of reality is that it consists of goings-on: of doing, feeling, happening, and being.” These events are organized in the semantic structure of the language. The significance of language lies in the depth of linguistics. But why is linguistics important, and can we move around without it?
Linguistics is imperative to understand the intricacies of world languages. It allows communication with multilingual people, translation activities, literacy efforts, and curing speech disorders. Every language is unique, and linguistics enables us to understand regional dialects and colloquialisms. Many notable scholars voiced their opinion on the importance of linguistics. Crystal and Davy (1969:9) view linguistics as a scientific field that delves into language study.
The trail of linguistics analysis and practice is continued in contemporary times, and the credit goes to entities like Eyhab Abdulrazak Bader Eddin, a man who has kept linguistics alive. Dr. Bader Eddin is a Syrian applied linguist, poet, writer, interpreter, and translator.
Dr. Bader Eddin borrowed his love for languages from his father and propagated it into a full-time career. He began his career at Damascus University as a language instructor and never looked back. Dr. Bader Eddin has an impressive educational and professional background and has served at various esteemed institutions such as Kuwait University’s College of Basic Education, both the Shamiyah and Adyilia branches.
Dr. Bader Eddin has also worked in Public Authority for Applied Teaching and Training at Kuwait Arab International University and the Open Learning Centre. Additionally, he has been an instructor at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia, and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Translation and Linguistics at Nizwa University in the Sultanate of Oman.
Interpreting is primarily linguistic and cultural analysis. It is observed that linguists and language instructors are excellent translators and interpreters, and the same goes for Dr. Bader Eddin. Fluent in English and Arabic, he has served as an interpreter in the public prosecution bureau, courts, the Ministry of Justice, Kuwait, and the Damascus Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Bader Eddin has a profound tenure as an interpreter for Saudi Arabia’s official and royal ceremonies. Between 2010 and 2011, Dr. Bader Eddin held the positions of linguist, interpreter, and translator for WYG International Company. His work was focused on the MEIP Program, which aimed to implement persuading solutions in Damascus. The European Investment Bank in Luxembourg funded it through the European Delegation to Syria.
On September 1, 2019, Dr. Bader Eddin was named a Qualified Member (Translator) by the United Kingdom’s Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) in the English-to-Arabic combination.
He is one of a select few individuals worldwide to have attained ISO 17100:2015 qualification and undergone ITI testing for Arabic-English. His dedication to his work and expertise is overwhelming.
Dr. Bader Eddin is keenly interested in translating Arabic into English and has published in numerous certified journals covering the vast topics of linguistics.
Dr. Bader Eddin’s publications include Translation Journal, the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Jerusalem Studies in Arabic and Islam (JSAI), Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen, Arab World English Journal (AWEJ), Education Resource Information Center (ERIC), SSRN, and Gesellschaft (ZDMG) (Journal of the German Oriental Society). Dr. Bader Eddin has revised the Arabic translation of the English version of the Italian Children’s literature book Fiabe lunghe un sorriso’ by Gianni Rodari. The translated version is named حكايات خرافية طويلة مرحة. It was done upon the request of the Qatar Ministry of Culture and Sports.
Dr. Bader Eddin boasts extensive research interests, encompassing various aspects of translation theory, such as competence, literary translation, stylistics, training, systemic linguistics, discourse analysis, and the significant features of the Gracious Quran in translation. He has demonstrated his unwavering dedication and passion for translation by presenting at several international conferences, including Oman’s 22nd International ELT Conference Program at SQU and the 11th International Conference titled Cultural Dialogues in Linguistics, Literature, and Translation in Jordan. Witnessing his commitment to advancing the discipline is truly inspiring.
Dr. Bader Eddin is a multifaceted and multidimensional professional who merges his passion into his profession. He is incessantly working in a linguistic field that needs more exploration. He is a member and a Chartered Linguist (CL) as a translator and language specialist (CIOL) in the Chartered Institute of Linguists. He is also a certified professional translator at the Arab Professional Translators Society and Arab Translators Network.
