Downsizing for a Move

Nowadays, not many people live in the same place for long. With people changing careers and jobs each day, the rate of relocation is on the rise. This doesn’t make relocation easier, though! Packing and moving all your items can be another stressful ordeal. But, you can downsize and enjoy a stress-free and fun move.

Here are downsizing tips for a stress-free move:

1. Prepare a checklist

Before you commence packing, take inventory of all your belongings. Divide your items into three sections, these are;

  • Often used items
  • Things that you use from time to time
  • Items that you rarely use

Sort your items accordingly and let go of the unnecessary items. These may include old clothes, electronics, books and kitchen appliances. Put them up for sale or donate to charities. Remember, the main aim of downsizing is to declutter and simplify your life, so avoid all that you don’t need.

 By so doing, you’ll need a smaller portable moving container or truck, and the moving company may charge you less. This shouldn’t end here, though. Keep the spirit of dowsing even in your new home. Keep on evaluating your belongings and only keep what you need.

2. Consider moving things to a storage space

You may have items of sentimental value that you won’t want to do away with. However, carrying them with you may not fit your new space. In this case, it’s advisable to use storage units. You’ll get such services at an affordable rate and can take your items whenever you need them.

3. Deal with bulky furniture

Your furniture may blend in well with your current space but may not fit the new home layout. Therefore, take measurements of your new space and be sure that your furniture will fit. If this doesn’t work, consider discarding your furniture and acquiring new pieces to match your new home.

4. Organize a garage sale

 Although you can donate or give out your belongings, you may want to make some cash out of it. Why not organize a garage sale before the move? This helps downsize but will also fetch some quick bucks. You can also use the money from the sale to cater to your moving costs. However, check with the state government for any rules and regulations governing such sales.

5. Go digital

Old bills, receipts and paper documents can add up to form clutter. Recycle what you don’t need, and transform important papers into digital copies. Scan the documents that you’ll require later on and have digital copies. Once done, shred them and dispose them of. You can also convert movie CDs and photos into digital forms. This will do away with a lot of clutter without throwing away your valuable documents.

Final thoughts

Downsizing will ease the relocation process and save a lot on moving costs. You don’t have to move with things that you don’t need. Instead, sell or donate to others who need them and ease the packing process. Also, contact a mover professional, discuss your needs and ways to make you move more comfortable.
