Continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) therapy is a primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea – a kind of sleep disorder. It involves using a CPAP machine connected to a nosepiece or mask to help you breathe. The machine improves your breathing by delivering constant and steady air pressure throughout the night. Wrong size or style CPAP mask

Various CPAP masks are available with different designs – some cover your mouth and nose with stretchy straps across your forehead and cheeks. These masks work well for individuals who breathe through the mouth during sleep and provide stability for people who toss and turn frequently.

If this mask makes you claustrophobic, you may try one that fits under your nose with straps that cover less of your face. Nasal pillows can feel less cumbersome; they are a preferred choice for people who wear glasses or read with their masks on. They do not block your eyes as much as full face masks do. However, these masks are not as stable as full face masks, making them unfit for people who move around in their sleep.

Dry, stuffy nose

A leaky mask often causes a dry nose. Therefore, always ensure your cover fits well. One of the signs that your mask doesn’t work well is, having to tighten the straps to prevent air leakage. You can also discuss with your provider about using a CPAP machine that features a heated humidifier. Such features allow you to adjust the humidification level. Using nasal saline spray at bedtime can also prevent a dry, stuffy nose.

Problems getting the hang of the mask

Wearing the CPAP for the first time is usually uncomfortable for most people. If this is you, try wearing the CPAP mask for short periods when still awake, like watching TV. Then, wear the mask with the machine turned on during the day. Eventually, after getting used to that feeling, use the mask every time you sleep, including when napping. Using the CPAP machine occasionally may delay how fast you get used to it. Use the machine for several weeks to establish if the mask and pressure suit you.

Difficulty tolerating pressurized air

Sometimes tolerating forced air can be a problem. You can overcome this by using a machine with a ramp feature that allows you to start with low air pressure. The device automatically and gradually increases the air pressure to your prescribed settings as you sleep. If this feature doesn’t help, talk to your doctor about using a bi-level positive airway pressure (BPAP) machine.
