You have undoubtedly already turned on your heat as a result of the falling temperatures and impending winter. If you haven’t had your fall furnace tune-up yet, you can experience problems with your furnace not giving off the desired amount of heat. There are a few things homeowners may do before calling a heating company for service or furnace repair, even though we always advise having yearly maintenance performed on any furnace that is between 3 and 5 years old. The majority of homeowners can check and fix the following six issues.

Check the thermostat

You should check a few things with your thermostat. Make sure the thermostat is first set to “Heat.” Check the temperature setting next. The thermostat is it set at the desired temperature, right? And finally, does the thermostat turn on the furnace? Make sure the furnace is turned on and active by lowering the temperature setting below the current temperature and raising it again by roughly 5 degrees above the current temperature.

Examine the Power

Even if your furnace runs on natural gas, electricity is still necessary for it to function. Ascertain that the power switch is in the “ON” position. Additionally, make sure the circuit breaker is in good working order and is in the “ON” position. Call a service expert if you need to reset the circuit breaker but it shuts off again right away after you do.

Replace your filters

One of the most frequent reasons for poor heating is a filthy or clogged air filter, which limits airflow and keeps fresh air from entering the furnace. If your air filter is clogged or unclean, replace it right away. Holding it up to a light is one way to check to see whether it needs to be replaced. The filter is functional if you can see through it; otherwise, it needs to be changed. Most filters need to be changed every one to two months, but make sure to check and abide by the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Examine the air intake vent

Your furnace will not function correctly if the air intake vent is stopped from receiving fresh air. Verify that the air intake pipe outside of your home is not obstructed by any debris or other objects. Leaves and other debris should be cleared away from the air intake vent.

Examine the blower motor

When you hear the furnace turn on, stand close by and wait for the electric blower motor to start. Warm air should also be coming through the vents in your house. The blower motor may have failed if you hear the furnace start up but don’t hear the blower motor start up or feel warm air coming from the vents. Call a furnace repair firm right away.

Examine the pilot light

A pilot light is included in gas furnaces, and it is typically hidden behind a small door or plate near the furnace’s base. In order to provide the furnace with an ignition source, this pilot light should constantly be lighted. Try igniting it with a long fireplace match or a grill ignitor if the light is out. Call a heating company if you are having trouble lighting it or if you have any worries about trying to ignite it.
