Chain Coupling Sprocket: Design, Working and Applications

Chain couplings are a cost-effective coupling method that has been used in mechanical assemblies for many years. Although other mechanically flexible couplings have entered the market in recent years, chain couplings have remained the most viable solution to certain coupling applications. 

A chain and coupling sprocket drive is an example of how power is conveyed to the wheels of an automobile. The body is made up of two-strand roller chains and two dedicated sprockets designed with hardened teeth. How they Work

The mechanical device is composed of two modified transmission sprockets and a double-strand roller chain. Despite its small size, the design of the chain coupling is simple and highly effective. It is composed of a specially cut robust chain and hardened-tooth sprockets designed to allow for transmitting a high amount of torque in a minimum of space. 

Consisting of a double-strand roller chain, two sprockets, and a coupling cover, the unit can connect two shafts, a motor, or a reducer directly to a machine to aid the delivery of efficient power transmissions. 

The coupling’s hardened teeth and roller chains display outstanding durability. The shafts can easily be coupled or decoupled using a single joint pin inserted or extracted from the roller chains. When using chain couplings at high rotational speed, it is recommended that you apply grease. 

The clearances between the sprockets and chain components absorb much of the positional misalignment of both shafts. The roller chain couplings operation is less affected by unavoidable expansion and contraction of the shaft. Even with minor misalignment, the chain coupling is capable of operating responsively and smoothly. This reduces the potential for wear and overheating commonly witnessed in more rigid coupling designs. 

Chain Coupling Sprocket Applications

Chain couplings are used in the transmission of power between two shafts. They are considered an economical way of transmitting power between shafts. Together with the chain coupling sprocket, they are normally employed in high torque, low to moderate speed applications and accommodate a 2 degrees misalignment between the shafts. Typical applications where chain couplings are used include line-shaft live-roller conveyors. 

Chain couplings are not often used in higher-speed applications where more sophisticated couplings are better suited. Being fairly rugged, chain couplings are considered easy to install. The manufacturer will ordinarily select the appropriate chain coupling sprocketsize and pitch for the specific torque requirements. However, knowing the sprocket pitch makes it possible and easier to choose a suitable replacement chain.
