Building A Feed-Only Performance Max Campaign
With the many changes going on in Google Ads, many online retailers were enjoying the luxury of those amazing Smart Shopping campaigns that would continually generate sales with little oversight. When that dark day arrived, and Smart Shopping campaigns were phased out, they were now introduced to the new kid on the block – Performance Max.
For those who were well versed in the Google Ads environment, it didn’t present too many issues to work through as they automatically rolled their Smart Shopping campaigns into the new Performance Max ones. But for some who transitioned and aren’t seeing the same results when it switched to Performance Max, creating a feed-only campaign might be the solution to take their account from zero to hero.
This product feed-only Performance Max campaign allows you to showcase your products in Google search results and Google Shopping, using only your product feed as the source of information. This type of campaign can be a great way to drive traffic and sales to your website, as it allows you to showcase your products to potential customers who are actively searching for what you offer.
For those still unsure, here’s a quick guide to help you get started by following these steps:
- Go to the Google Ads homepage and log in to your account
- Click on the “Campaigns” tab and then click on the “+” button to create a new campaign
- Select the “Shopping” option from the list of campaign types, then select “Performance Max” as the campaign subtype

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the feed setup process. This will involve mapping your feed attributes to the required fields, as well as setting up any additional settings such as pricing, shipping, and tax information.
- Once your feed is set up, click on the “Ad groups” tab in the left-hand menu, then click on the “+” button to create a new ad group
- Give your ad group a name and select the feed that you want to use for this ad group
- Select your target audience, including any targeting options such as age, gender, location, and interests
- Set your budget and bid amount for your ad group
- Click on the “Save and continue” button to review your settings and complete the campaign setup process
Once your feed-only Performance Max campaign is set up and running, you can use the Google Ads interface to monitor its performance and make any necessary adjustments. This can include changing your bid amount, targeting settings, and ad creative to optimize your campaign for maximum results.
Whilst a feed-only Performance Max campaign can make life easier to manage your account, do you have the time to keep up on top of it, or make the necessary adjustments to scale it? What about other campaigns that can help improve your effort, creating even more sales?
Ask yourself this one question – Is your time better spent working on your business or would it grow quicker having a professional Google Ads agency working on it to help grow your sales?
