Conversations swirling around the apocalypse have soared this year due to global health concerns. These conversations have had a lot of people asking themselves, “Am I prepared?”
It can be hard to prepare for an apocalypse when you don’t know exactly what it might look like. Will the apocalypse be caused by an airborne pathogen? Will nuclear fallout be a factor?
While nobody can predict for certain what we should be prepared for, there are general survival tips that will come in handy in a wide variety of apocalyptic situations.
If you’re adamant about being prepared for the worst, keep reading. Below, we have compiled a list of pragmatic tips sourced from survival experts that will give your family the best chance of being safe should the worst come to pass.
1. Have Access to Fresh Water
You can live for weeks without food under certain conditions. Three days without water though and you’ll be in the ground.
When the apocalypse hits, running water is likely to be shut off or contaminated. Furthermore, water sitting in lakes, ponds, or streams may be rendered undrinkable.
The best way to ensure access to drinkable water in these scenarios is to start with a baseline supply of it. That means you should have large tanks that are filled with drinkable water to keep you going right after a serious event takes place.
As you work down that supply, you can use a filtration system you’ve purchased in advance to capture and clean water from external, more sustainable sources.
2. Basic Medical Supplies and Skills Save Lives
You don’t need to be a doctor or registered nurse to have effective medical skills during an apocalyptic event. Knowing things as simple as how to dress wounds and administer CPR can go a long way.
With that in mind, if you can take first-aid courses in your area, take the opportunity to do so. In addition to developing basic medical skills, you’ll want to stock up on supplies.
Antibiotics, fever/pain reducers, bandages, and a good disinfectant are all great things to have access to.
3. Look Into Underground Shelter
Any sort of shelter during the apocalypse will help you survive. An underground shelter that’s hard to spot and has one secure entryway is much better.
You can’t know for sure if an apocalyptic event will make earth’s surface uninhabitable for a time. This could be the case during nuclear fallout periods after a warhead goes off.
To protect yourself from that and from people that may mean to do you harm, specialized shelter below ground is an investment that’s worth pursuing.
4. Self-Defense May Be Necessary
Desperation can lead people to do horrendous things. If you’re well-stocked for a serious event and others in your area are not, you may find the pressure to part with your supplies and may even run into a situation where people use force to ensure their survival.
To protect against these incidents, having a plan of action when it comes to self-defense is key.
While most people want to reduce conflict during times of strife, sometimes, you’ll be forced to face it head-on.
5. Sustainable Power Is Key
Whether it’s to power lighting in your shelter or it’s to keep your space climate controlled, having access to power is critical. Power grids will almost certainly be down during an apocalyptic event which means you’ll have to generate your energy.
Leaning on solar energy or energy that comes from a manual crank are two viable means of keeping your resources powered. Having gas generators and a supply of fuel as a backup means of generation is also a great idea.
6. Plan on a Mixture of Canned and Grown Food
We’d be remiss if we didn’t put access to food among our survival tips. To start, you’ll want access to ample canned/non-perishable food stores. In a perfect world, you’d have a year supply of these items per person you’re sheltering with.
To keep yourself fed after your stores run out, have a plan laid out so you can immediately start planting food items that you can grow in perpetuity.
This means having seeds on-hand and the skills/environment necessary for those seeds to flourish.
7. Stay in Communication With Each Other and the World
If you’ve checked all the boxes we’ve mentioned so far, you have everything you need to survive for the foreseeable future. All that’s left to worry about is staying in communication with your party and with the world around you.
When it comes to communicating with your party, having short-distance radios and knowing walkie talkie codes will go a long way. As far as communicating with the world around you is concerned, a crank-powered radio that can pick up government and self-produced frequencies will help you receive safety updates and may provide you with a means of socialization and entertainment until conditions improve.
Our Survival Tips Should Serve As a Jumping Off Point
As we mentioned in this post’s intro, the kind of apocalyptic event you’re faced with will affect best practices when it comes to survival tips.
We hope that the general advice we’ve provided is enough to get your party off to a safe start during an event. Form there, assess your conditions and take precautions accordingly.
