Interviewer: Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Dena Falken, the CEO of Legal-Ease International, a company that provides specialized Legal English training for legal professionals worldwide. Thank you for joining us, Dena. Let’s start with your journey. What inspired you to create Legal-Ease International?
Dena Falken: Thank you for having me. Legal-Ease International was born out of a desire to bridge a gap I noticed in my early career as a lawyer. I saw firsthand how challenging it was for legal professionals from non-English-speaking countries to fully grasp the complexities of Legal English. One wrong word could change the entire meaning of a legal document, which can have huge consequences. That’s when I realized there was a real need for a service that could provide targeted Legal English training for professionals worldwide. So, I created Legal-Ease International to fill that void.
Interviewer: That’s incredible. You’ve created a global enterprise that helps legal professionals all over the world. What challenges did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?
Dena Falken: The early days of Legal-Ease International were filled with challenges, as with any entrepreneurial endeavor. One of the biggest obstacles was convincing legal professionals of the value of Legal English training. Many thought their existing English skills were sufficient for international law. But as we started working with top firms and institutions, word spread about how even small improvements in Legal English could make a massive difference in legal practice. I had to stay persistent and believe in the value we were bringing. It wasn’t easy, but with hard work and a lot of networking, we’ve built a strong reputation over time.
Interviewer: Speaking of networking, how important has networking been in growing your business?
Dena Falken: Networking is essential. As an entrepreneur, especially in a global business like mine, relationships are everything. In the legal world, it’s often who you know that opens doors. I’ve always believed that even if someone doesn’t become a client immediately, building that relationship can lead to future opportunities. I’ve also learned that not every interaction turns into a client, but that’s part of the process. It’s important to keep reaching out, making connections, and staying visible in your industry. That’s something I advise anyone looking to grow their business.
Interviewer: What do you think has been the key to your success, particularly with Legal-Ease International?
Dena Falken: I think the key to our success is twofold: First, it’s understanding the specific needs of our clients. Legal English is very different from conversational English or even business English. It’s highly specialized, and one mistake can change the entire outcome of a case or a contract. Our team ensures that our clients are not just proficient in English but are experts in the legal nuances of the language.
Second, it’s adaptability. The legal world is constantly evolving, and so are the language demands that come with it. We’ve tailored our programs to meet the needs of legal professionals in a variety of contexts — from international law to specific jurisdictions. It’s this adaptability that has allowed us to grow as a global enterprise.
Interviewer: Legal-Ease International operates worldwide. How do you manage the demands of a global business?
Dena Falken: One of the best things about running a global business in today’s world is the flexibility technology offers. I’ve embraced the nomadic entrepreneurial lifestyle — I can work from anywhere. I’ve run seminars from all corners of the globe, and Legal-Ease International continues to thrive because we’ve adapted to this new way of working. It’s amazing to be able to meet clients from different parts of the world, and at the same time, maintain a healthy work-life balance by working remotely.
Interviewer: That’s inspiring! Many people feel like they need to be tied to an office to run a successful business. How did you shift into this more flexible, nomadic way of working?
Dena Falken: It’s all about embracing the possibilities that technology brings. Early on, I realized that a business like Legal-Ease International doesn’t need to be confined to one location. With online platforms, video conferencing, and a great team that’s also adaptable, I’ve been able to run this business from anywhere in the world. I think it’s important for entrepreneurs to remember that success doesn’t have to look a certain way. You can make it your own — for me, that means being able to work from anywhere while still delivering top-notch services to our clients.
Interviewer: That’s a fantastic mindset. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly those who want to build a global business?
Dena Falken: The first piece of advice I’d give is to never be afraid of rejection. Not every pitch will turn into a client, and not every client will immediately see the value you’re bringing to the table. But every “no” brings you closer to a “yes.” Keep refining your approach, learning from each experience, and most importantly, keep networking. Build those relationships because they will pay off in the long run.
The second piece of advice is to stay adaptable. The world is constantly changing, and especially in a global business, being able to pivot and meet the needs of your clients is essential. Finally, believe in what you’re offering. If you don’t believe in your product or service, neither will anyone else.
Interviewer: That’s solid advice. So, what’s next for Dena Falken and Legal-Ease International?
Dena Falken: We’re always looking for ways to expand and bring our services to more legal professionals around the world. We have some exciting new workshops planned in various countries, and we’re continuing to develop online programs to make Legal English training even more accessible. I’m also passionate about helping other entrepreneurs succeed, so I’m looking into mentoring programs where I can share what I’ve learned over the years. For me, it’s all about growth and giving back.
Interviewer: Thank you so much, Dena. It’s been wonderful hearing about your journey and insights. We wish you continued success with Legal-Ease International!
Dena Falken: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure. I’m excited for what’s next and grateful to have shared a bit of the journey with you.
