Adam Milstein and his wife, Gila, founded the Milstein Family Foundation (MFF) to instil pride and courage in the Jewish People of the diaspora, strengthen the unique alliance between the United States and Israel, and combat bigotry and hatred in America and beyond. MFF provides Americans and American of Israeli descent with the knowledge and skills to advocate for the State of Israel and stop the radical Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement from spreading its hatred all over the U.S.
MFF’s work is guided by three unique principles: active philanthropy, strategic advancement, and philanthropic synergy. Adam Milstein says, “After working for many years with a variety of organizations, we realized there were ways to improve philanthropy focused on Israel and the Jewish people to achieve greater impact.” Through active philanthropy, MFF augments its financial support by investing significant time and expertise into the projects and organizations that it supports. The foundation focuses its efforts on organizations, existing projects, and new initiatives that combat bigotry and hatred in proactive ways that engage the American public.
MFF has played a crucial role in combating BDS by working with partner organizations to inform the public about the movement’s antisemitic agenda, rejection of Jewish self-determination, problematic funding sources, and connection to terrorism.
The foundation links funding resources between nonprofit organizations and encourages them to create synergies so that their impact is amplified. As part of this effort, MFF supports dozens of organizations, such as the Israeli-American Council (IAC), the American Israel Education Foundation (the charitable educational organization affiliated with AIPAC), StandWithUs, Aish HaTorah, Hasbara Fellowships, Taglit-Birthright Israel, and Christians United for Israel. On this front, MFF also supports the MERONA Leadership Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to creating a collaborative network of nonprofits focused on fighting antisemitism and the radical hate movements spreading it.
Adam Milstein believes that when it comes to fighting antisemitism, the time to act is NOW. He wants Jewish organizations to work together at every possible opportunity to fight antisemitic bigotry.
MFF also positively impacts the lives of children by teaching them important values from Jewish literature and tradition. Adam and Gila Milstein believe that the next generation of American-born Israelis will carry on the legacy of the State of Israel and continue proactive philanthropic work.
The role of MFF is illustrated in several questions:
- How can we, as Jewish people, find inspiration in the face of contemporary challenges from our literature and tradition?
- How do we double down on our commitment to strengthen and secure the future of the Jewish people and the State of Israel as inspired by stories like the Maccabean Revolt in the second century BCE?
- How can we draw a comparison between events in Jewish history and the present struggle of Jews against BDS and antisemitism?
MFF’s aims to make an impact on every Jewish family so that the Jewish people continue to thrive. They are concerned with instilling the community with values that have always been a part of Jewish identities, such as pride, courage, persistence, knowledge, innovation, brotherhood, and passion.
Additionally, MFF aims to equip the next generation of Jewish leaders with skills to defy the odds against them. Although Jews make up less than 0.2 per cent of the world population, they have accomplished extraordinary feats. The Jewish nation has always held the belief that the impossible is possible, from historical episodes like Joshua conquering the Land of Israel, the Maccabees overcoming the Greeks, and the State of Israel defeating six Arab armies in the 1948 War of Independence. MFF strives to pass down this mindset to Jewish children so that as they get older, they too can help solve the challenges facing the Jewish people worldwide.
MFF maintains a proactive role in combating and educating about antisemitism in America. “The Milstein Family Foundation will continue our work of igniting pride and courage in the next generation of community leaders,” says Adam Milstein.
