Aaron Sherinian – Taking Global Communications Through United Nations to the Next Level

We live in the era of global communications where technologists and scientists have accomplished what politicians and militarists have attempted but failed to achieve throughout history. Global communications have made it possible for all people to be more in touch with one another, which promotes improved understanding and, possibly, world peace. This has also allowed humanity to flourish considerably. As a constructive tool, global communications can relieve distress, facilitate group collaboration to find effective treatments for deadly diseases, provide us with entertaining events, and generally make life a lot easier.

As a forum for building a better world and addressing new and complex challenges, the United Nations has acted indispensably. It draws together all countries and different participants to take coordinated action across the global community in order to improve people’s lives and the environment. The Department of Global Communications tells the UN story across multiple platforms, both digital and traditional, in order to increase support for the UN’s objectives and efforts. It has reached billions of people with objective, reliable information, and a comprehensive message through the UN’s global offices and operations in 60 countries, allowing the civil society, public sector, private sector, and Member States to participate in the UN’s goals. Similarly, many political leaders, global communicators, and international organizations have strived to bring revolution in the traditional ways of global communications. Aaron Sherinian is one of these prominent figures!

Born on March 2, 1972, in Pasadena, CA, Aaron Sherinian is best known for co-creating the famous engagement campaign, #GivingTuesday, and the international fundraising movement. During his early career days, Sherinian served as the Managing Director of Public Affairs at the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. Government development assistance agency administering $7 billion in poverty reduction grants in 40 partner countries.

Considering the remarkable beginning of Sherinian’s career, the United Nations Foundation appointed him as its Executive Director of Communications and Public Affairs. In this role, he led the foundation’s public relations efforts, strategic outreach, and media relationships, and continued to build its online presence. His expertise of exploring new ways to discuss issues like sustainable development, global health, women empowerment, and climate change helped United Nations Foundation to change the conversation about the UN and its relationship with the U.S.

Sherinian spent over a decade assisting government agencies in improving their public communications about international issues. His new role at the UN Foundation included an assertive planning to support the organization in strengthening its relationships with new and non-traditional media in order to emphasize how the foundation integrates resources, ideas, and people into UN causes. He led a strong team of communicators and public affairs professionals with a track record of developing and implementing successful public affairs campaigns in his new role.

Prior to joining the UN Foundation, he concentrated on communications and international development challenges as a member of the US State Department’s Foreign Service, with experience in Armenia, Ecuador, and Costa Rica.

Sherinian also held positions as a marketing consultant for the Italian distributors of Apple Computer and as a freelance interpreter and writer in Italy. He is a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) as well as the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC). Sherinian, in an interview, said about UN Foundation, “I am proud to be part of an organization that recognizes that today’s pressing global challenges require us to work together as a global community. There are meaningful, tangible ways for people to get involved in their world today and I look forward to being part of the UN Foundation at this exciting time in its history.”
