IELTS Test Score: How to Calculate?

Now that it is clear how to send IELTS scores to universities, students should be aware of calculating their test scores. IELTS test score band ranges between 1 and 9. The overall score band that a student receives is the average of the score bands one obtains in each of the four test sections: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

In case the average comes to a decimal point, it is rounded off to the nearest whole band. For example, if a test-taker gets an overall score band of 7.25, the final score would be rounded off to 7.5. Similarly, if one obtains a total score band of 8.75, they will receive a score band of 9.

The following representation will help in having a clear understanding of how the IELTS score is calculated. Let’ say a test-taker has achieved the following scores in four different test sections:

Test SectionsScore Obtained
Reading6
Writing6.25
Speaking5.75
Listening6.25
Total Score band6+ 6.25+ 5.75+ 6.25= 24.25/4 = 6.062

The final IELTS score would stand at 6.1. The minimum IELTS score requirement will depend on the country, the institution and the type of degree course one opt for. Most universities in the US need students to secure a minimum overall score band of 7, while those in Canada require 6 score band in each of the test sections.
