- Detangle Properly
Curly wigs are more prone to tangling. Because of this, if you want to maintain your curly wigs, then detangling them properly is something that you will have to master. Fortunately, the process is fairly simple. You’ll want to:
- Work on damp/wet hair
- Split your hair into smaller sections
- Apply a conditioner with good slip
- Use your fingers or a good-quality detangling brush to comb out tangles, starting from the ends working back up to your roots.
- Stay Away From Harsh Shampoos
Speaking of wash day, please stay away from harsh shampoos. Shampoos that contain sulfates will clean the hair so thoroughly that they will strip the hair of its natural oil, sebum, that helps keep the hair moisturized. This will cause you to struggle with dryness, and increased frizz and tangling, which may cause you to start using another harmful category of products that we’ll cover next.
So, try and keep up away from any shampoos with sulfates, and be careful to read the product labels of your shampoos, especially those labeled as “clarifying shampoos” as these are the most notorious ones.
- Stay Away From Heavy Moisturizers
If you’re struggling with dry hair, it can be so tempting to use heavy moisturizers such as petroleum jelly/grease, silicones, and mineral oils. But as helpful as they can be in the short term, in the long term, they do more harm than good.
These heavy moisturizers are hard to wash off of the hair with regular shampoos. So, to get them off of your curly wig, you’ll have to use shampoos that can strip the hair. These, in turn, make the hair feel even drier, so you opt to use a heavy moisturizer to help your hair stop feeling dry. So, a cycle of heartbreak ensues.
Now, if you don’t wash them out of your hair properly, you’ll eventually end up with product buildup on your curly wig. Once this happens, your hair will end up chronically dry because the buildup will keep it from being able to get any water or moisture in. Either way you cut it, it’s a good idea to avoid these.
- Deep Condition Often
Curly hair isn’t easily moisturized because of the shape of the hair. Sebum simply isn’t able to travel as far down the hair shaft as it would with straight or wavy hair. So, you’ll need to give it a boost often to keep it just as moisturized. Cue the deep conditioner!
Deep conditioners are treatments that moisturize or strengthen the hair. Most deep conditioners will focus on only one of those benefits, but you can find 2-in-1s that are great for regular use and maintenance of healthy hair. Use these as often as needed to combat frizz and help keep the hair healthy.
- Define the Curl Pattern Again
You need to define the curl pattern on your wigs now and then. This keeps curly wigs from looking dull, frizzy and sometimes, unkempt. Luckily, this part isn’t that hard. All you need is a really good curl-activating product. This could be a leave-in-conditioner, curl cream, styling custard, mousse or moisturizing gel.
Apply the product to your hair, and then use a brush or your fingers to define smaller sections of your hair. Your unit will be looking brand new in no time!
