Iridium Plugs

Iridium is the top-of-the-line technology in the world of spark plugs. Iridium is an extremely hard and dense precious metal with an incredibly high melting point, making it the most durable electrode material available.

The true advantage of iridium is that it allows engineers to create an ultra-fine-wire center electrode. This small, fine-wire tip requires much less voltage to create a spark.

  • A More Focused and Consistent Spark: This leads to a more efficient and complete combustion of the fuel, which can improve fuel economy and increase horsepower.
  • The Longest Possible Service Life: Iridium is the most durable material, and these plugs can often last 25% longer than even a platinum plug.

The Heat Range

Beyond the material of the electrode, one of the most important specifications of any spark plug is its heat range. This is a measure of the plug’s ability to transfer heat away from its firing tip.

A “hot” plug has a longer insulator nose, which means it dissipates heat more slowly and stays hotter. This helps to burn off carbon deposits in a low-speed engine.

A “cold” plug has a shorter insulator nose, which means it dissipates heat very quickly. This is essential for a high-revving, high-performance engine to prevent the plug from overheating and causing pre-ignition.
