What are Globe Valves, and how do they work?

Industrial Globe Valves control the flow of a liquid or gas into a process. They are also known as “sprinkler valves” because they typically have a sprinkler-like head that allows them to be placed under Process Piping. Process piping can include many components, such as conduits, piping systems and tanks. Industrial Globe Valves are most often used for fluid control in industrial processes. In these applications, one end of the valve is connected to a fluid source, and the other is connected to a destination. The valves may be used to control the flow of liquid into a process, or they may be used to control the flow of gas into a process.

Globe valves are used extensively in the process industries because of their smooth, non-flowing operation characteristics and ability to be easily mounted in various locations. Globe valves are generally characterized by a rotating disk connected to a spring-loaded diaphragm. When the disk rotates, it pushes against the diaphragm, which causes it to pop open or closed. They are used to regulate flow rates in processes such as water and wastewater treatment and liquid and gas supply lines. The design of a globe valve provides four main benefits:

  • Globe valves can be mounted in locations that are hard to reach or where other types of valves would not fit due to their shape. 
  • Globe valves are typically more reliable than other types of valves because they have fewer moving parts than other types of valves. 
  • Globe valves are easy to maintain and operate.
  • Globe valves can accommodate different liquids and gases, making them ideal for many applications.

Major types of Globe Valves

Globe valves have two parts: a body, usually made of metal and connects to the pipe or device, and a handle, which controls the valve by opening and closing it. There are different types of Globe Valves available depending on their purpose:

  • Ball Valves: Ball valves use a spherical ball to control the flow of liquid or gas. They are most commonly used in industrial applications where high pressure is required. 
  • Wedge Valves: Wedge valves are also used in industrial applications to control high-pressure water and gas. They also have two parts: a wedge-shaped body that opens and closes and a handle that you can use to open and close the valve. 
  • Spring-loaded Valves: Spring-loaded valves consist of two parts: a spring that opens the valve when released and a handle that you can use to open or close it.
  • Check Valves: Check valves are designed to prevent air from flowing into a system when not needed. They look like small holes with metal covers over them, and they have an internal mechanism that prevents air from passing through when one side is opened.
