7 Best and Worst Home Remedies for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in your rectum. Sometimes, these veins swell so large that they bulge out and cause rectal bleeding. You should always see a doctor for your hemorrhoids to get a proper diagnosis. However, below are some of the best and worst home treatments for hemorrhoids.

Epsom Salt

Taking a warm bath for 20 minutes helps irritation from hemorrhoids. Add Epsom salts to your bath to further reduce pain. You can add salt to your bathtub or use a sitz bath. A sitz bath sits on top of your toilet. You can fill it with your Epsom salt bath and soak just your anus.

If you choose to take an Epsom bath in your bathtub, fill your tub with 4-5 inches of hot water. Make sure the water is hot enough to melt the salt, but not too hot so that you can still get in. Add 2 cups of Epsom salt (or ½ if you’re using a sitz bath). Sit in the bath for 10-20 minutes. Rinse yourself after the bath and pat dry to avoid further irritation.

You can buy Epsom salts at your local grocery store or pharmacy.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Although apple cider vinegar is often recommended for home remedies, there is no scientific proof that it treats hemorrhoids.  Apple cider vinegar can also burn your skin when applied directly.

Apple cider vinegar has many uses at home. However, there are other safer and more useful home remedies for hemorrhoids.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that can help alleviate your hemorrhoids. Aloe vera is safe for topical use. Make sure you are not allergic by doing a skin test on your arm. Apply a dime-sized amount to your forearm and wait a day to see if you have any negative reaction. If you don’t, you should be fine to use aloe vera for relief from your hemorrhoids.

Make sure to use pure aloe and not cream with aloe in it.

Tea Tree Oil

The effects of tea tree oil on hemorrhoids are not studied enough, so don’t try this method at home.

Coconut Oils

There are many ways to use coconut oil to treat your hemorrhoids. You can cook with coconut oil or add it to your food. Try it on toast! You can also create coconut oil suppositories. Just shape the coconut oil with your hands into small pellets and freeze them for a day. Another option to use coconut oil for your hemorrhoids is to add it to your bath. Add about half a cup of coconut oil to hot water for ultimate soothing effects.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is an anti-inflammatory and is said to reduce bleeding and itching.

Witch hazel is safe to apply directly to hemorrhoids. Or, you can buy soap or wipes with witch hazel in them. Witch hazel is not found in foods, but you can also eat witch hazel leaves to achieve the same soothing benefits.

Dairy

Avoid eating dairy, white bread, or processed foods as these have little fiber and can make you constipated.

Instead, eat foods high in fiber, such as beans, lentils, fruits, and vegetables.

If you take iron supplements, talk to your doctor as these can cause constipation.
