Port Stephens

Situated some 2.5 hours north of Sydney is Port Stephens. This bay is a sunken river that is now home of the Great Lakes Marine Park.  The bay is home to a variety of marine life including about 150 bottle nose dolphins. The bay has multiple beaches in that offer a calm and relaxed beach experience particularly good for families. There are also several surf beaches outside the bay on the coastline which offer a great ocean surf experience.

Port Stephens has a lot of water activities to do including: whale watching, sunset tours, swimming, diving, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, fishing and fishing tours. Many of these water activities start from the Nelson Bay Marina within Port Stephens.

There is also activities like bushwalking, sand dune surfing and plenty of scenic spots to visit.

Byron Bay

Byron has long been a stop for travellers to visit on the east coast trek. Cape Byron is the most easterly point of the Australian continent and provides great views up and down the coast. Byron is also the point where the cold water currents meet the hot water currents which creates a very rich and vibrant marine life in its waters. Julian Rocks in the middle of the bay is a very popular dive spot for this reason.

Byron has maintained a small town feel even though it has become quite busy over recent years. The town has plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy and the outlook across the bay is fabulous. The Bay itself forms a nice family friendly beach and lends itself a consistent surf break.  Surfing has long been popular at the beaches around Cape Byron’s headlands.

Byron Bay caters to a range of activities including swimming, surfing, diving, beach walking, bush walking and whale watching. Byron Bay is also close to the other townships of Lennox Heads, Brunswick Heads and Nimbin. All places are different but worth a trip for a change of scenery and experiences.

Noosa

Noosa is located 2.5 hours north of Brisbane and is a very popular little township. The Town is situated on the waterways of the Noosa River and connecting lake systems. Noosa headlands’ is a national park and provides a wonderful set of beaches that are very popular with families, visitors and surfers.  The headlands are easy to walk from town and offer nice easy strolls and views to the visitor. It also provides Noosa with one of the very few north facing beaches that is the main family beach and sits right next to the shopping precinct of Hastings Street.

Port Douglas

Heading north of Cairns one hour’s drive is the tropical township of Port Douglas. The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas is one of the great drives in Australia, as the road hugs the coastal headlands moving from one little awesome beach around a headland with amazing ocean views onto the next perfect beach.  Port Douglas sits just south of the Mossman and the Daintree on a four mile flat wide sandy beach. The township is also backed by a creek that hosts the Marina and leads to a small headlands that overlooks the surrounding area.

Port Douglas is a great little spot to stop as it has plenty of restaurants and cafes to eat at, but also has plenty of things to do. You can visit the barrier reef for a snorkel trip, swim the ocean, sail for the day or maybe take a fishing trip. You can also drive to Cape Tribulation in the Daintree for a day trip. The Daintree is the only place in Australia where tropical rainforest meets coral reefs at the beach.  On the way to Cape Tribulation you can visit Mossman Gorge, take a walk in the rainforest and enjoy the perfect freshwater creek of the gorge.

Overview

All the towns I have mentioned have plenty to do and much to see. They are ideal for visiting on a longer holiday and they also have multiple caravan park options for accommodation in your campervan.
