Businesses are facing more pressure than ever to be agile, flexible and responsive. The rise of digital technologies and the growing speed of business evolution is forcing companies to think differently about how they approach change.
What is business transformation?
Business transformation is the process of thoroughly changing an organization by redefining business processes, culture, and strategies to meet changing market conditions, customer demands, and organizational objectives.
The result of successful business transformation is a company with a competitive advantage over its rivals. Companies that have undergone transformations should be more productive, more efficient and better able to capitalize on opportunities.
A recent study by McKinsey & Company found that 80% of their respondents reported a need for significant transformation in their business models over the coming five years. But transformation isn’t easy. It requires careful planning and preparation, as well as an intimate understanding of the factors that contribute to success — and failure. If you’ve ever tried to transform your business, you know that it’s not easy. Every project has its ups and downs; some are more successful than others. In the last few years, I’ve spent a lot of time working with clients who are attempting to transform their businesses. As a result, I’ve learned what factors can make or break a business transformation.
1. Identify the right problem to solve
First, be clear about what problem you want to solve with your transformation effort. If possible, start by identifying a critical pain point in your current business model that needs to be addressed. Then, discuss how transforming your organization could help to resolve it.
2. Create a vision and plan for the future state
Once you have identified the key problem you would like to address through the transformation, develop a vision and plan for an ideal future state that addresses that issue. If possible, consider using design thinking and other proven innovation methodologies as part of this process.
3. Have a strong leadership team
If you don’t have a strong leadership team in place, it’s going to be very difficult to successfully transform your business. Leadership is critical because it involves setting the vision for what needs to be done, managing the change process, inspiring people and removing obstacles that employees encounter when trying to implement change. People need to see an example of what they should be doing if they’re going to buy into the process and feel empowered to make changes themselves. Leaders also need to be able to communicate clearly and consistently with employees so they understand why change is necessary and how it will benefit them.

4. Empower employees
The best way for employees to become engaged with business transformation is by making them part of the process. That means giving them some degree of autonomy over how they’ll go about changing their work habits and approaches as well as explaining why it’s in their best interest as well as the company’s if they make those changes.
