These programs take volunteers from various countries and help organise travel and accommodation arrangements in order for travelers to help out where needed.

Many millenials look to volunteering and want to add a greater purpose to their travel. These volunteer and social welfare programs provide them with the opportunity to travel abroad, help communities in need, and observe and learn from different cultures. While there are hundreds of places to volunteer around the world, we picked our favourite four locations you should consider on your next humanitarian trip.

Cambodia:

Cambodia is a beautiful country, from its landscapes to it’s people. Sadly, locals have faced an immense amount of hardship and now many Cambodians are living below the poverty line. From political turmoil, financial insecurity, human trafficking, violations of human rights, and a poverty cycle due to generational trauma, not all Cambodians have access to the opportunities they deserve in life. One thing that has not suffered however is the spirit of the people. Cambodians are welcoming and positive. Volunteering in Cambodia means engaging with the people, helping them get the future they deserve, all while seeing the unique historic sights it has to offer.

India:

India is known for having one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. It is an exciting place with a variety of rich cultural heritage and a number of languages. However, the gap between the rich and the poor is one of the biggest in the world. Millions of people living in India are living in poverty. They are facing a number of issues because of the extensively larger population and lack of substantial resources. You can take part in volunteer work programs in India to help female empowerment, education, sanitary facilities, medical aid, and childcare.

Japan:

While Japan is an advanced country and society, there is a constant need for english speaking volunteers to travel there and teach english to locals. This is a great way to experience the unique culture and lifestyle Japan has to offer. It’s also a great opportunity to stay longer through a program and really experience what life is like there while contributing to their education. English teaching jobs don’t require too many classifications if you’re a native speaker. It’s also a great chance to learn Japanese yourself while teaching English.

Thailand:

Thailand is a popular destination for travelers wanting to volunteer and those just wanting a tropical getaway. Famous for its food, beaches, temples, and nightlife, Thailand is a culturally rich country with so much to offer. Not unlike its neighbouring country Cambodia, many Thai people are living below the poverty line. While many Thai communities have volunteer programs in place, you can also help out animals in Thailand. Many elephants have been used for entertainment in Thailand. There are currently organisations doing the right thing and saving rescuing these animals into safe sanctuaries. You can volunteer to help out in these sanctuaries and help nurse these animals back to good health and ensure they live a happy life as they should.
