The Surfing Capital of the Philippines, La Union, hails in the north. Tourists most often visit it during its two (2) peak seasons: the Northern and Southern swells. The promise of great waves, surfing, lounging – and great food lulls and lures many people to La Union every year. 

What are the things one should do when in La Union? In La Union, you can do a lot of great things. Some of the most mandatory are checking out the waves, eating, and shopping. However, Elyu is more than that. You might check out the following activities as well:

Surf

La Union’s waves are one of the best in the Philippines. The peak season for surfing in La Union is divided into two (2). These are the Northern Swell and the Southern Swell—the amihan winds cause the Northern Swell from November until March. Meanwhile, the Southern Swell happens from July until October. It is the habagat winds that cause the Southern Swell. 

Plenty of places around La Union are perfect for surfing – especially for beginners. These are located by the beach, too. However, what helps constitute the perfect timing for a surf session is the weather.

Although most recommend and advise a surfing trip in La Union during their peak Swell seasons, if you are a beginner, you can just come in anytime. Due to the prominence of surfing in La Union, plant and teachers can teach you h if you are a beginner. With the supervision of a teacher, you can finally learn and practice your surfing skills properly and safely too. 

Eat

Eating is something mandatory and intrinsic in all of us. There’s no doubt that all of us enjoy eating. And even more so if the food tastes great and is produced from the right ingredients and the freshest quality possible. 

In San Juan, La Union, fear not – for plenty of great food is ahead. There is a wide bevvy of cafes and restaurants, some becoming quite the great institutions in La Union. Some have catapulted to such great fame that they are even getting branches in the great Metro! 

Located at the side of the Mad Monkeys burger restaurant, Tagpuan is one of San Juan, La Union’s food places. Their food at Tagpuan is mostly Filipino rice bowls topped with favorites like tapa. They also add adobo flakes to their food. One regional speciality in Tagpuan that you should try is their bagnet rice bowl. The dish is one of the best and crispiest pork belly dishes ever!

Party At Night

La Union also has a rich nightlife. Peaceful and calming by day, it becomes fun and festive at night. The holiday party spirit in La Union is most potent and felt during Saturday nights and holidays. Music may play during weekdays. However, it is a different story on weekends: the DJ shares his playlist. 

One notable nightlife spot is Flotsam and Jetsam Hotel. 

Lounge

Lastly, you can lounge around in a San Juan La Union hotel. La Union is a paradise for the weekend warriors. However, it is valid if you want to rest and unwind indoors. Hotels have plenty of amenities where you can do that.
