Summer has officially started! On June 21st the longest day of the year came and went, and now it is hot out every day. As the seasons change, many of us experience the desire to shift things in our life to reflect the season. Everyone is familiar with a wardrobe change between winter and summer, but not as many folks are in the habit of making changes around the house as we are switching pants for shorts. In addition to doing practical things like better insulating the house, we also encourage you to decorate your home for the summer months to keep your spirits high and get the most out of everyone’s favorite season.
1. Spruce up the outside
It is easy to neglect outdoor space during the colder months. But now that it is summer, give it the attention it deserves. You can hang fun things like windchimes, string lights, or pinwheels! Get a small garden bed or some pretty terra cotta pots and plant some flowers or herbs! Hint: mint grows like crazy and can thrive almost anywhere (but do not let it take over if you have other things in your garden). Or you can really go all out and buy garden furniture, or create a hot tub oasis! Whatever you do, do not forget about the need for shade. Maybe you are lucky and have a choice tree or three that naturally enhance your outdoor area with some relief from the beating sun, but in many outdoor spaces, you need to add that yourself. There are many options such as: a large patio umbrella, or a pop up tent that you can put up on an as-needed basis. No matter how big or small your outdoor area, there are always some cute additions to incorporate.
2. Bring the outside inside
If it is too hot to spend a lot of time outside, then bring the great outdoors to you! Our first suggestion is the easiest: just order flowers online! Then you have a gorgeous bouquet in your home that looks beautiful and smells amazing. It will brighten up the space with minimal effort from you. And after a week or so you can dry the bouquet to preserve it. Simply take it out of the water, and hang it upside down.
Our second idea is a bit more labor-intensive, but will last for more than just the summer: house plants! There are a huge variety of indoor plants, many that do not need a ton of attention and are hard to kill! We recommend starting with plants like the pothos, snake, plant, ZZ plant, or spider plant. All of these will add a bright and green pop to your space, and get you in the summer spirit. Plus, there is nothing more fun than watching a new leaf unfurl!
3. Door Decor
Spreading some summer joy does not have to be confined to inside your house, you can also spruce up your front door! Finding a summer wreath for your front door is a beautiful and welcoming addition to your home. Although technically it is not inside, it is a lovely summer addition that will make your houseguests and neighbors both feel summer joy! You can pick out a wreath with a specific color scheme to complement the permanent decorations you have in your home. You can also find a summer doormat to put on your front stoop. Although this may seem inconsequential because it is literally underneath your feet, it is a small touch that people do notice! Everyone who passes the threshold into your home will interact with the doormat, and seeing cute summer fruits, or beautiful bright colors is sure to add the summer vibe you are going for.
With these three tips you can start the summer off stunning! Which of these decorations will you be incorporating into your summery space? Share with us in the comment section below.
