10 Productivity Tips for Web Designers

If you’re a web designer, you know that most people need help understanding what we do or how we work. We design websites, right? They think we sit at our desks all day and change them until they are perfect. But there’s more to it than that! Here are some important tips for Web Designers:

1. Always Have a Signed Contract and SOW

It’s important to have a signed contract and SOW. an “SOW” is short for “Statement of Work,” which is a document that outlines the scope of your project, including what you plan to build, how long it will take, and other details such as budget numbers.

The goal here is for both parties (you and the client) to understand exactly what they’re getting into before starting any work on their website or app.

If you still need an SOW in place (or even if there isn’t one), you can use our template as inspiration! Just make sure everything looks correct by using this checklist:

  • Is there enough detail? Do all parts match up with each other? Are terms used consistently throughout?
  • Is every item on my list included? If not, how could I add it without changing anything else around it?

2. Use a Time Tracker

Time tracking is an important part of any project. It allows you to see where your time goes and helps you prioritize what’s most important, which can help you find more efficient ways of working. Many tools are available for time tracking, but we recommend using Google Sheets as it has a nice interface and is easy to use.

It would help if you also took advantage of the auto-completion features within Google Sheets. When information is entered into cells, the system will automatically fill in values from other cells in your spreadsheet based on what has already been entered. They are keeping track of your time much easier!

3. Create Your Ideal Schedule

An ideal schedule allows you to manage your time and projects in an efficient and effective way. It’s easy to think of this as simply having fewer hours in a day, but quite a few things go into making sure that happens.

For example, suppose you have two clients who need content on their websites simultaneously but only run into each other sometimes (or ever). In that case, it might make more sense for them both to meet with you at once rather than have one come in while the other waits outside his office door like some human waiting room attendant—and let’s not even get started on how much faster these meetings would be if they didn’t use up precious minutes talking about anything but coffee mugs instead!

4. Schedule out Everything in Your Task Manager

Scheduling out your tasks is a great way to ensure you’re working on the right things at the right time. It’s also helpful to see how much stuff is coming in and when, which can help with organization.

5. Templatize Your Process

Templating is a way to create templates for your processes and then reuse them over and over again. It’s like building a house in Lego; only instead of using blocks that come from all different directions, you’re using blocks that are created by the same template (like a compass).

The idea behind templating is that it helps you stay on track, so you don’t have to repeat the same mistakes or do something completely different than planned because someone needs to remember something important when creating their design solution.

6. Automate as Much of Your Admin Work as Possible

Automating as much of your admin work as possible is a great way to save time and make things more efficient. You can use automation tools like Zapier, IFTTT, and MailChimp’s Webhooks to automate tasks from email notifications, social media sharing, website analytics tracking, and more.

It’s also important to keep track of what tools are available for automating tasks to save time trying out new ones when there are already plenty in place that works well for you!

7. Create a Toolbox You Can Use From Job to Job

Having a toolbox of resources and tools you can use from job to job will save you time and energy. You may have multiple website design projects at once, so the tools in your toolbox must be accessible and easy to use.

Here are some things to include in your online resource center:

  • A list of helpful resources for any project (including blogs and podcasts)
  • Useful templates for common tasks like logos or icons

8. Minimize Disruptions and Distractions

It’s important to be aware of your surroundings. Your environment can affect how you feel and perform, so watch the clock or look around for anything distracting you from work.

For example: If someone comes into the room where you’re working, ask them to wait until everyone has left before continuing their conversation. Or if someone pokes their head in and asks if they can do anything for you (eek), tell them no thanks and continue working as normal.

9. Create a Dedicated Contact Channel

  • Be clear about what you want
  • Be clear about how to contact you
  • Be clear about when and how long it will take for your response

10. Get Comfortable With Saying “No.”

This is not a time to be timid and afraid of saying no. This is the time to stand up for yourself and your goals, even if it means saying “no” to something that may not be ideal for you right now.

If you’re working on a project and someone asks you to do something different than what was agreed upon by both parties, take a deep breath, and think about why they asked in the first place (is it because they don’t understand how much work needs doing?), and then explain why this particular task/project won’t work out as well as others have been able to accomplish before. If all else fails—and sometimes it does—you could always say: “I’m sorry, but I can’t accept this assignment.”
